Paper Shredder lubricating oil - Paper Shredders

Can I use plain vegetable oil to lubricate my paper shredder blades?

The shredder came with a short bottle of some sort of oil, but I lost it. Can I use vegetable oil without risk of damaging the element?

Oil is a unlucky choice, IMHO.
Powdered graphite would not gum up the works, as the paper produces subtle dust which attaches to the oil, and requires more intense maintenance.
Powdered graphite convenient on line.
